JC Butler House

Guest Rating:

Vacation rental house. Sleeps 8, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. Dogs allowed.

719 W Main St Lexington, KY 40508 United States

The Holiday Life is proud to present our newest historic downtown gem, JC Butler House! This stately home was built in 1848 by Mr. James C. Butler, who was a business partner of local Architect John McMurtry on several antebellum real estate deals in downtown Lexington. It was originally a one story Greek revival cottage but later received a second story addition. This Bluegrass Trust protected property is comprised of a ground floor living room, dining room, kitchen and glass enclosed sitting porch as well as 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths - the master is on the ground floor with the other two guest rooms upstairs. There is beautiful natural light throughout and outside, you have a large private courtyard, grilling and dining area, and a tranquil fountain water feature. A pathway leads from the back door of the house to the detached two car garage that is available for parking with space for two additional cars in the driveway - a total of four private parking spaces! The downtown location is wonderful - right on Main Street across from the convention center and walking distance to Rupp Arena and all the best downtown restaurants and bars.

Bedroom Details: First floor master bedroom has a king size bed, a second floor master has a queen size bed and separate sitting area with queen sleeper. Third guest room has two twin beds to sleep a total of 8 guests!

a guest from San Antonio, TX - Texas does not recommend this vacation rental.

We stayed here as a family group for 5 nights. We own a 5-star vacation rental & know what is involved in offering a top-notch guest experience. This property is a lovely renovated historic home & has lots of potential but it falls short & has lots of issues with details that afford it a low rating.
There is a TON of street noise (think NYC sirens and vehicle noise). White noise machines and earplugs are provided but don't cut it. There are no window coverings on the top half of the windows & all bedrooms front a street light. Noise and light are a recipe for sleep disaster! Strangely, 1 twin bed in a bedroom had a duvet cover & the other bed in the same room did not. More pillows could have helped improve a difficult sleeping situation.
We did not have enough towels for the number of guests registered. When we got a few more towels on Day 2 it was surprising that there were a total supply of eight mismatched towels in the entire house (the max occupancy)!
Dust bunnies lurk when looking behind and under furniture for plugs to charge your phone.
Confusingly, the owner (via an on-site notebook) and property manager had different instructions for what was expected of us upon departure and even different check-out times. We had no idea which ones to follow.
Parking is VERY tight. We happened to have rented 2 SUVs and there was no way they could fit in the garage. It was tight getting one vehicle into the garage & another behind it. Turning around & getting out of the driveway was really tricky. We resorted to parking on the street when we could find a space. The issue is that you have a hike around the neighboring house to get to the back door in order to enter the property, as you are not allowed to utilize the front door.
While the decor is nicely done, if guests cannot get a good night's sleep & lack basic amenities like hot showers then all is for naught.

Our experience could not have been better. The check-in and out process was a breeze and we loved the house. More than enough room for 7 adults and centrally located to everything we did.

Madeline B from Roswell, GA recommends this vacation rental

This is a beautiful, historic home in extremely good shape. We loved our stay and it was very comfortable. The kitchen has a nice coffee bar (a Keurig with lots of pods, sugar, creamer), there are plenty of clean, new sheets, towels and comforters (if you are staying in cooler weather). We went with another couple and there were two separate little seating areas so you can have some private time. There is a beautiful dining room where we had nice candlelight dinners (candles provided by the owner). Full kitchen with everything you need to make meals. But our very favorite part of the entire house, is the backyard, which is a wonderfully landscaped courtyard with a fountain and white lights for evening. There is a nice table to sit at and a gas grill.

In terms of location, it is on the west side of Lexington, which made it very convenient to go to Keeneland, the majority of the top Bourbon distilleries and only 70 miles from Louisville and Churchill Downs. We had great day excursions and then came home to our courtyard for relaxing with our newly acquired bourbon and some appetizers! The location is near the university and there is a nice Kroger there for easy shopping.

Overall, a wonderful house and a wonderful experience. We highly recommend the property!
